Halloween in Santa Monica: A Frog Hat, Purple Uplighting and More Than Ten Years of Spooky Dance Floors

Every October 31, one party is already on my calendar. On Halloween night 2026 I DJ'd a private costume party for Babak and Sheila at their home in Santa Monica, and I have now played their Halloween for more than ten years. I'm DJ Sam House, and this one never gets old.

A courtyard made for Halloween

The party lived in a lovely courtyard that glowed with purple uplighting. Purple is a Halloween classic for a reason: it turns walls, trees and plants into something moody and a little magical, and it makes costumes look even better. By mid-party the dance floor was full of guests in costumes, and the mood was exactly what a Halloween party should be: spooky, silly and very danceable.

The frog hat

Yes, I wore the hat. If the guests are in costume, the DJ should be too, and the green frog hat was my entry. It also makes a great conversation starter at the booth. Take a look at the short clip below to see the courtyard in action.

Thank you, Babak and Sheila

Playing the same party year after year is one of the best parts of this job. You get to watch a tradition grow, and you learn what makes the room move. Thank you, Babak and Sheila, for inviting me back again. Here's to the next one!

Planning tip: Halloween and costume parties

Hosting your own Halloween party? A few ideas:

  • Set the mood with light. Uplighting in purple, orange or green makes a room feel like a party the moment guests walk in.

  • Let costumes lead. Plan a dance floor with room to move, since big hats, capes and horns need a little space.

  • Mix it up. Blend seasonal favorites with songs everyone knows, so every guest has a reason to join in.
