A birthday party can be anything: a nightclub in your living room, a casino in your ballroom or a backyard bash with a fire dancer. I'm DJ Sam House, and here are some favorite private parties from 2004 to 2010.
Music video Sweet 16 in Orange County (August 2007)
My son's name is Max, and this Sweet 16 was for a boy named Max, so let's just say I plan to do the same for my own boy's 16th. We used a video projector to project MTV-style music videos on the wall, and all the kids went crazy. The decorative lighting was spectacular.
Surprise 70th in Beverly Hills (May 2009)
This was Mark's surprise birthday party in Beverly Hills. At 70 years young, he was so cool that I can only hope to be like him at that age. We had a great time dancing and carrying on, and a surprise guest showed up claiming to be one of Mark's nurses. Classic!
Club Sultan (January 2010)
Sultan wanted his own nightclub for his 14th birthday at the Olympic Collection, and I was happy to make his wish come true. With the help of our MC, we rocked the room. Club Sultan was off the chain!
Nick's nightclub at home (March 2010)
Nick's 14th birthday turned his place into a happening nightclub where all his friends could get crazy, and they did. If your teen wants a nightclub, lighting and a good DJ can turn almost any room into one.
Monte Carlo for Ed and Coco's 50th (March 2010)
Ed and Coco's 50th birthday bash was a huge success. The Monte Carlo theme included blackjack, poker, roulette and craps. Everyone tried their hand, and when the chips were gone, they filled the dance floor and rocked with us until the very end.
Ann's 40th in Chatsworth (March 2010)
We rocked and rolled all day and partied all night. Happy birthday, Ann Marie!
A backyard party with a fire dancer (August 2007)
I can't remember exactly when or where this photo was taken, but I was the DJ at a birthday party where the family brought in other performers. I just thought this picture was too cool to leave out: a fire dancer!
An alcohol-free celebration in Santa Monica (March 2004)
One of the earliest parties I documented was an alcohol-free community celebration at a lodge in Santa Monica. Those guests can party! We had a deluxe lighting setup with a disco ball, and it was alcohol-free and rocking all night.
Planning tips for your own party
Pick a theme. Casino night, a nightclub or a video wall instantly gives guests something to do.
Light the room. Great lighting makes a living room or backyard feel like an event.
Let the honoree lead. The best parties reflect the birthday person's personality.
