Corporate events don't have to be stiff. In June 2006 I had the chance to DJ a Blue Shield event at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, and the client's request was simple and fun: old-school hip hop and scratching. I'm DJ Sam House, and that was an easy assignment to say yes to.

Old-school hip hop, on request
Blue Shield asked for old-school hip hop, so I built the set around it. I had everyone grooving to classic Beastie Boys and Run-DMC tracks, and when I started scratching to the beat of the music, the crowd got hyped. There was a lot of fun had by all, and watching a room full of coworkers loosen up on the dance floor is one of my favorite things about corporate work.
Why this one matters to me
Since this event, Blue Shield has hired me back for several other corporate events of theirs. For me, that is the best compliment a client can give. Repeat business means the music worked, the planning was smooth and the team felt well taken care of.

Planning tip: let your company's personality drive the music
If you're planning a company party, product launch or team celebration, start with your audience:
- Think about your crowd. What did they listen to growing up? A nostalgic set, like old-school hip hop, can unite coworkers from many different departments.
- Talk about the flow. Is the music a backdrop for networking, or are you hoping people will dance? A good DJ can do both and shift gears through the night.
- Plan for the venue. A studio lot or a unique location may come with its own rules about sound, load-in and timing, so loop in your DJ early.
A bit of planning and a request or two from you is all it takes to make a corporate event feel like a party.
