Some birthday parties are good, and some are legendary. Stacy's 60th birthday party at the Woodland Hills Hilton, in July 2008, was definitely in the second category. I'm DJ Sam House, and I had a great time providing the music for the evening.
Casino night in full effect
The night started with a casino night provided by Casino Knights, and everyone was gambling and having a great time. I played music while guests won at the tables. Casino games give guests something to do together right away, and they get the mixing and mingling started without any awkwardness.
A raffle, then the dance floor
After all the gambling was done, I coordinated a raffle that turned guests' winnings into trips to Laughlin, Nevada, and gift cards provided by Stacy's daughters. It was a fun way to wrap up the games and bring everyone together before the dance floor opened.
When it was time to turn out the dance floor, the room filled with dancers enjoying the intelligent lighting provided by House Entertainment.
One very cool request
I was a little surprised when the very cool 60-year-old guest of honor requested "Lean Like a Cholo." Wow! I only hope I'm that cool when I'm 60. It's a great reminder that a birthday celebration is about the guest of honor's personality, and the best requests are the ones that surprise you.
Planning tip: milestone birthday parties
- Add an activity. Casino games, a photo slideshow or a trivia game make the first hour fun.
- Make a playlist with the honoree. The songs that mean the most to them are the ones that make the night feel personal.
- Let family contribute. Gifts, speeches and surprises from loved ones make a milestone special.
