It is amazing how much can be accomplished in just one short morning. On December 17, 2009 I volunteered my time and DJ services to entertain the workers of Home Depot as they helped restore and beautify the Westside Jewish Community Center in Los Angeles. I'm DJ Sam House, and this is one of the projects I'm proudest to have been part of.
Magic in a morning
From painting fences to landscaping, the people of Home Depot made magic happen. The Westside Jewish Community Center serves the entire local community and is used by nearly 15,000 people each month, so every improvement made that day will be felt by a lot of families. It was my pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful project.
Music at a volunteer event
Volunteer days can be hard work, and good music keeps people energized and connected. I played upbeat tunes while volunteers got their hands dirty, and the sound brought everyone together as they worked toward a common goal.
Planning tip: team-building and community service days
If your company or group is organizing a volunteer event, here are a few ideas:
- Add music. An upbeat soundtrack gives the whole team energy and helps people from different departments connect.
- Plan breaks and celebrations. A short lunch or wrap-up gathering is a great way to recognize everyone's effort.
- Capture the day. Photos and short videos make it easy to share what your team accomplished.
If your team is planning a service day or a company celebration, I'd love to help.
