Some wedding dates just feel special, and August 8, 2008 was one of them. An 8/8/08 wedding only happens once in a lifetime, so when Jeremy and Paulina celebrated at the Pasadena Masonic Temple, I wanted the music to match the occasion. I'm DJ Sam House, and this night is still one of my favorite Pasadena memories.
Music for young and old
From the moment guests walked in, the whole room was grooving. Jeremy and Paulina wanted a party for every generation, so I built the night around their favorites. Most of it was Latin: cumbias, banda, salsa, merengue, reggaeton and more. I also worked in some old-school hip hop and even a little house music, and everyone from the youngest guests to their older relatives ended up on the dance floor. For much of the night it was packed, which is exactly how I like it.
A few special moments
During dinner I played a fun photo montage of the happy couple. After dinner I got everybody out of their seats and onto the dance floor, and later in the evening we turned on the intelligent lights to completely change the atmosphere in the room. At the end of the night, I gathered everyone into one big circle with Jeremy and Paulina dancing in the middle, and we finished with a giant group hug.
A planning tip from this one
If your guest list spans several generations, don't pick one genre and hope for the best. Give your DJ a mix of must-play songs, a few "please skip" songs, and some styles that will bring the older and younger guests together. A good DJ will read the room and blend those favorites so the dance floor stays full.
Congratulations again, Jeremy and Paulina. It was an honor to be part of your day.
