I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love my job. On August 30, 2008, I had the unique opportunity of performing for the friends and family of a fellow UCLA Bruin, Russell Westbrook, the number four pick of the 2008 NBA Draft. I'm DJ Sam House, and this was a night to remember.
A celebration for the whole family
The party celebrated Russell's entrance into the NBA as a Seattle SuperSonic, and it took place at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. We had the whole room dancing to hip hop, R&B and even a little old-school 70s funk. Russell's family was the nicest group of people you would ever meet, and I was honored to be a part of their celebration.
The music mix
A milestone party like this one calls for a mix that works for everyone in the room: younger friends, parents and relatives. I kept the set centered on hip hop and R&B, then brought in some classic funk to bring the older guests onto the dance floor too. When the generations dance together, you know you got it right.
Planning tip: music for a milestone celebration
Whether you're celebrating a draft pick, a graduation or a big career moment, a few ideas can help the night:
- Know your guest list. The more your DJ knows about who's coming, the better the playlist.
- Pick a few meaningful songs. Your favorite tracks, or ones tied to your journey, make the celebration personal.
- Choose a venue with character. A museum or gallery space offers an unusual backdrop and gives guests something to talk about.
Congratulations again, Russell, and best wishes to you and your family.
