Some parties call for a big sound system, and some call for something smaller and smarter. Jeff's 50th birthday party in Santa Monica, in July 2008, was the second kind. I'm DJ Sam House, and here are a few pictures and memories from the afternoon.
Blue #50 shirts for everyone
The other guys at the party and I all wore custom blue "50" t-shirts. It's a small detail, but it made the whole group feel like a team celebrating Jeff, and it looked great in photos.
Jeff's favorites, plus one
Jeff's wife, Mariana, requested nothing but classic rock, which is Jeff's favorite, plus "the apple bottom jeans song," which is Little Mariana's favorite. A birthday playlist doesn't have to follow a formula. Mixing the guest of honor's favorites with family requests makes for a more personal party.
The right gear for a small space
Because space was limited, I used my NuMark iDJ2 iPod mixer. I always bring that mixer with me in case I need it as a backup, but for this party it was ideal. Everyone loved the music and the great Brazilian food.
Planning tip: small and backyard parties
If you're hosting an intimate birthday party at home, keep a few things in mind:
- Share your space details. Let your DJ know about room size, power access and where guests will gather.
- Choose the right setup. A compact rig can sound great and take up very little room.
- Plan the food and music together. Great food and the right soundtrack are the heart of a good backyard party.
Happy 50th, Jeff!
