Every so often I get the privilege of meeting a couple who really show what love looks like. Assaf and Mayumi were one of those couples. I'm DJ Sam House, and I'm happy to share a few memories from their wedding at Shanghai Red's in Marina del Rey on March 15, 2009.
From beginning to end
Everything went perfectly from start to finish. The setting by the marina gave the day a relaxed, waterfront feel, and the energy of the room built all evening. We kept the dance floor packed, and by the end of the night guests were telling the couple and me what a great time they'd had. You could tell how much Assaf and Mayumi love each other by the way they looked at one another, and that warmth carried through the whole celebration.
About those photos
In my original post I apologized for the pictures, which I snapped on my iPhone. The professional photos were coming from Damien Smith Photography, and that's a lesson in itself: let me capture a few behind-the-scenes moments, but leave the real memories to a photographer who can focus on them all day.
Planning tip: waterfront receptions
If you're thinking about a waterfront venue in Marina del Rey, keep a few things in mind:
- Sound: open-air and water-facing spaces change how music carries. Talk with your DJ about the layout so the ceremony and the dance floor both sound great.
- Timing: golden hour is gorgeous, so ask your photographer and planner how it fits with your toasts and first dance.
- Backup plans: a quick conversation about wind and weather helps everyone stay calm on the day.
