Some venues feel like old friends. Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, and its sister property the Calamigos Equestrian Center in Burbank, are two of those for me. I'm DJ Sam House, and over the years I've had the pleasure of providing the music for a number of weddings at both. Here's a look back at a few favorites, along with a little of what makes these venues so popular with Los Angeles couples.
Calamigos Ranch, Malibu: the Oaks Room (2005)
One of my earliest Calamigos weddings took place in April 2005, in the Oaks Room. I took a couple of silly pictures of myself hiding behind the disco ball that hung right above my turntables, and it's still one of my favorite photos. It was also a fairly high-profile wedding: actor Gary Sinise, the brother of the groom, was among the guests. Everybody had a great time, and I got a compliment from Gary at the end of the night. I haven't forgotten that one.
Mike and Jessica: a ceremony in front of the waterfall (July 2009)
What a beautiful day to get married! Mike and Jessica were an amazingly cool, down-to-earth couple, and their wonderful friends and family made the day unforgettable. From the ceremony in front of the waterfall to a big group hug at the end of the night, the entire party was flawless. A big shout-out went to all the Michiganders who traveled to celebrate with us.
Doug and Lisa at the Equestrian Center (June 2009)
At Doug and Lisa's wedding at the Calamigos Equestrian Center in Burbank, Doug was an especially nice groom and Lisa an exceptionally beautiful bride, a great match. We also had a birthday shout-out for Uncle Harry, who was 96 years young. Lisa and Doug were a very cool, down-to-earth couple, and it was my pleasure to celebrate with them.
Michael and Cathryn: two traditions, one party (November 2009)
This wedding was a big hit. We combined Jewish and Thai traditions into one awesome party, from the hora to the Thai circle dance, and we got everybody moving. As a bonus, it turned out this super cool couple lives very close to me. If you're blending traditions, it's worth knowing that a good DJ can work with your families to make sure every moment is honored and every guest feels included.
Planning tips for Calamigos weddings
- Choose your space early. Calamigos offers several different spaces, from indoor rooms to outdoor ceremony sites. Think about how your ceremony, cocktail hour and reception will flow from one to the next.
- Ask about timing and sound. Every venue has its own rules about when music has to end, so build your timeline around them.
- Share your traditions. Special dances, entrances and songs help your DJ create a one-of-a-kind night.
