On June 18, 2009 we celebrated Jim and Danielle's wedding at La Venta Inn, one of the most beautiful locations in Palos Verdes. I'm DJ Sam House, and I called it a classy, cool location with plenty of scenic views. That description still fits.
Gardens, views and a gazebo
The grounds are the kind of place photographers love: winding garden paths, blooming flowers and a gazebo looking out toward the water. The photos I took that day, on my phone, hardly do it justice. I had hoped to get great pictures and video from the other vendors, and I'm lucky to work with teams who bring their cameras and their talent.
A guitarist who impressed me
Our amazing guitarist, Paul, played everything from Dave Matthews to Tom Petty, and I was impressed. Live music during a ceremony or cocktail hour sets a warm tone, and a talented musician who can cover a wide range of styles is a treat for guests. Jim and Danielle were an awesome couple, and we all had a fantastic party.
Planning tip: mixing live musicians and a DJ
Many couples want the best of both worlds: live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, then a DJ for the rest of the night. A few ideas that help:
- Plan the handoff. Decide who plays what and when, and share one timeline with everyone.
- Share equipment details. Musicians and DJs can often use the same speakers and microphones, so ask early.
- Pick songs for each moment. Let your musician know your processional and first-dance favorites, and tell your DJ which songs to follow with.
When everyone is on the same page, the transitions feel effortless.
Congratulations again, Jim and Danielle!
