Malibu High School's Homecoming Dance

I'm DJ Sam House, and I'm back from a super school dance with my friends at Malibu High School. On November 1, 2008, it was Malibu's Homecoming, so after the football game, everyone filled up the gym and danced their hearts out.

It was also the day after Halloween, and there was a haunted house with monsters like the Joker, who spilled over into the party. It was a lot of fun, and I can't wait to party with them again. Happy Halloween and happy Homecoming, Malibu High!

What makes a school dance work

School dances are some of my favorite events, because students bring so much energy. A great school dance comes down to a few things: a safe and welcoming atmosphere, music that students actually want to hear, and an organized plan from the school staff and student committee.

Planning tip: school dances and homecomings

If you're organizing a school dance, here are some ideas:

  • Get student input. Ask for song suggestions, then work with your DJ to review lyrics and keep the playlist school-appropriate.
  • Use the whole space. A gym can feel big and empty without lighting. Lighting helps create a party atmosphere.
  • Add a theme. Spirit week, costumes and a haunted house help students feel part of the event.

  • Plan the flow. Decide ahead of time when announcements, spirit games and any royalty or award moments will happen, so the music keeps its momentum.

If your school or youth organization is planning a dance, I'd be glad to help.
